I am an adoptee who has found her biological mother three years ago. We have a wonderful relationship and I am a much better person, as is she, for ending the long period of unknowingness.

My concerns are as follows: I believe it is in the best intrest of the adoptee to at least have the right
to a medical background of both biological parents as well as some kind of
consent form indicating whether or not either of the parents wish to be
found. Because my history was not available to me, I went misdiagnosted
with a serious genetic condition which has left me unable to have children
of my own. If I had my medical history available to me, even before meeting
my biological mother, I could have received early treatment and would have
no reason to correspond with you today.

My biological family and I have
discussed the issue and have decided that we would like to help change the
confidentiality laws in New York State because of my medical situation. I
feel, as do they, that genetic medical histories of anonymous parents are
absolutely essential to an adoptees health and well-being.

Has this subject
been taken on before either in other states or at the federal level?

Do you
have any suggestions in how we can go about making a stand for our cause
without breaching the subject of confidentiality?
